چکیده

Using finite basis sets, it is shown how to construct a local Hamiltonian, such that one of its infinitely many degenerate eigenfunctions is the groundstate full configuration interaction (FCI) wave function in that basis set. Formally, the local potential of this Hamiltonian is the optimized effective potential and the exact Kohn-Sham potential at the same time, because the FCI wave function yields the exact ground-state density and energy. It is not the aim of this paper to provide a new algorithm for obtaining FCI wave functions. A new potential is the goal.

M ay 2 00 7 Relation between exchange - only optimized potential and Kohn - Sham methods with finite basis sets ; solution of a paradox

Arguments showing that exchange-only optimized effective potential (xOEP) methods, with finite basis sets, cannot in general yield the Hartree-Fock (HF) ground state energy, but a higher one, are given. While the orbital products of a complete basis are linearly dependent, the HF ground state energy can only be obtained via a basis set xOEP scheme in the special case that all products of occupi...

Precise response functions in all-electron methods: Application to the optimized-effective-potential approach

The optimized-effective-potential method is a special technique to construct local Kohn-Sham potentials from general orbital-dependent energy functionals. In a recent publication [M. Betzinger, C. Friedrich, S. Blügel, A. Görling, Phys. Rev. B 83, 045105 (2011)] we showed that uneconomically large basis sets were required to obtain a smooth local potential without spurious oscillations within t...

Orbitals in Quantum Chemistry

Orbitals, on the one hand, are often considered as auxiliary quantities without physical meaning for various reasons. Slater determinants, e.g., Hartree-Fock or Kohn-Sham determinants, are invariant with respect to unitary transformations of the occupied orbitals. Within densityfunctional theory (DFT) orbitals frequently are considered as quantities that merely generate the electron density but...

Excited state nuclear forces from the Tamm-Dancoff approximation to time-dependent density functional theory within the plane wave basis set framework

An efficient formulation of time-dependent linear response density functional theory for the use within the plane wave basis set framework is presented. The method avoids the transformation of the Kohn–Sham matrix into the canonical basis and references virtual orbitals only through a projection operator. Using a Lagrangian formulation nuclear derivatives of excited state energies within the Ta...

Electrical response of molecular systems: the power of self-interaction corrected kohn-sham theory.

The accurate prediction of electronic response properties of extended molecular systems has been a challenge for conventional, explicit density functionals. We demonstrate that a self-interaction correction (SIC) implemented rigorously within Kohn-Sham theory via the optimized effective potential (OEP) yields polarizabilities close to the ones from highly accurate wave-function-based calculatio...
